    ​The Federal Highway Administration says on average 85% of the deaths in highway work zone crashes are drivers and passengers in cars. The National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign -which begins at the start of the highway construction season -aims to prevent work zone fatalities by encouraging safe driving through highway work zones and construction sites. 576 people died in work zone crashes in 2010, which equates to one work zone fatality every 15 hours.
